About us

Connecting artists with spaces, and people with places

Withington Walls is a grassroots street art project bringing colour, creativity and conversation to the streets of Withington. We work with artists and local people and businesses to paint shutters and walls turning neglected or unloved surfaces into public artworks. The project is volunteer-led, relying on donations and grants, collaboration and shared ideas rather than commercial commissions. The result is a free, open-air gallery that everyone can enjoy

The Marcus Rashford Wall of Hope

The Marcus Rashford mural became one of the project’s most powerful moments, not once but twice. Created to celebrate Rashford’s local roots and his work tackling child food poverty, the mural took drew much interest and acclaim and then later took on a life of its own when it was defaced and the community responded by covering the wall with thousands of messages of love, solidarity and support. That response sparked international attention — but more importantly, it showed what collective kindness looks like. The mural now underpins an educational resource that brings this story to life and explores themes of community, activism and empathy, designed for schools and youth groups

Public art with purpose

Withington Walls also supports wider causes and conversations. Alongside celebrating local culture, the project has helped raise awareness and funds for other causes and community initiatives By using public art as a platform, the works amplify messages of compassion, inclusion and solidarity, while inspiring creativity, reflection and positive action in others. It’s about showing how art in everyday spaces can encourage people to care, respond and get involved
